Elevating Connections: Reflecting on the On Aging 2024 Conference as a Transformative Journey

Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities (AD) Executive Team and staff members, participated in the American Society on Aging’s (ASA) On Aging 2024 conference, held from March 25 to March 28 in the vibrant city of San Francisco.

This gathering brought together gerontologists, industry experts, and thought leaders, united in their quest for innovative solutions to the myriad challenges confronting older adults.

The conference served as a nexus for networking, ongoing education, and the exchange of best practices spanning the breadth of our nation. On Aging stands as the preeminent multidisciplinary conference on aging, annually convened for members of the ASA. This year, the agenda delved into diverse themes such as longevity in the workforce, technological advancements, industry innovation, and advocacy, as well as navigating issues like aging with HIV and fostering health, dignity, and meaningful connections in later life.

Central to the discussions was the critical examination of isolation and loneliness, accompanied by explorations into leveraging technology, educational initiatives, and intergenerational projects to bridge divides and cultivate a sense of community.

AD’s Assistant Director Winna S. Crichlow found profound inspiration in the simple yet profound reminder that “If you’re alive, you’re aging.” This sentiment was particularly poignant during the “Walk the Talk” presentation, where panelists emphasized the transformative power of embracing new opportunities and serving others. Crichlow reflects on her inaugural ASA conference experience, remarking on its remarkable diversity and the undeniable sense of purpose it instilled.

Anna Avdalyan, the department’s Assistant Director over its Senior Centers Branch, was inspired by the mantras: “‘Aging is Living,’ ‘Cherish your Tomorrow Self,’ and proudly ‘Own Your Age.’ While LA shines,” she added, “there’s always room to grow and learn!”

Attendees were encouraged to reimagine their perceptions of aging, to nurture a profound love for their future selves, and to embrace the notion that it is never too late to pursue one’s passions.

This year’s conference held a special significance as ASA celebrated its 70th anniversary, infusing the gathering with a palpable sense of optimism and celebration.

The Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities team extends heartfelt gratitude to ASA for curating such a profoundly enriching experience. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to reconvene next year, furthering our collective mission to enhance the lives of older adults across our communities.
