October marks Ageism Awareness Day, offering the perfect opportunity to challenge harmful stereotypes about older adults. Ageism is widespread, but raising awareness can counter its damaging effects. Two recent video segments — one about work, one about play — remind us that older adults are vital and vibrant members of our communities.
Aging well means combining unparalleled experience in the workforce with moments of fulfillment in our personal lives. By raising awareness and embracing inclusion, we create a society that respects and uplifts people of all ages. Let’s reject ageism and thrive as a community where every age is celebrated.
The County Department of Human Resources (DHR) is shining a spotlight on older workers through the limited web series Timeless Wisdom. This series celebrates the invaluable contributions older employees bring to the County workforce.
The first episode features Dr. Laura Trejo, Director of the Aging & Disabilities Department, who shares insights on how older workers strengthen and enrich the County. Hosted by the dynamic Lisa M. Garrett, DHR’s Director of Personnel, the series aims to inspire by highlighting the power of experience.
But it’s not all work. Older adults are also thriving socially. The recent Senior Luau Dance at the Los Nietos Community and Senior Center in Whittier was a perfect example. Filled with food, music, and dancing, it was a celebration of staying young at heart during Senior Center Month. You can catch a glimpse of the joy in the “Keeping the Heart and Limbs Young” video report, by the L.A. County Channel.
