On Friday, September 1, 2023, the Potrero Heights Park Community and Senior Center recognized its volunteers in a wonderful and heartfelt ceremony. The theme of this year’s event was “Volunteers are Shining Stars” so the Potrero staff did everything to treat their volunteers like stars. They decorated the Center with chosen colors of black, gold, and white. Bouquets of bright flowers and plants decorated the tables. A photo slideshow of our shining star volunteers displayed on a large TV screen, while live jazz music added an elegant touch that suited the occasion perfectly.
Guests were served a delicious lunch and desserts. The volunteers were presented with certificates of recognition provided by First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. They also received goodie bags, prizes, and took lots of fun photographs.
“I love my job” exclaimed Angela Bagmanian, the Center’s cheerful director. “The most challenging and rewarding part of my job is being able to accomplish so much with only a few employees. Without volunteers, this Center wouldn’t be the same: most of our daily classes and activities would have to be cancelled. Our volunteers lead drawing/watercolor, tai-chi/yoga, hula, Zumba, line dance, power walk, exercise, dance fitness, and meditation – just to name a few of the activities we offer.”
“Our volunteers contribute their amazing talents, energy, and time to this Center – which is simply incredible!” added Mirna Valdez, Potrero’s Neighborhood Worker. “Every day our volunteers do and give so much but expect nothing in return. Therefore, once a year, we hold a recognition event to show our volunteers how much we care and value their time and skills. Our volunteer appreciation event is our most important event of the year because it is our time to express gratitude.”
All in all, the volunteer recognition event was a gala affair that has yet to be forgotten. Recognizing volunteers is crucial because it makes a significant difference in the lives of those we serve. Congratulations to all those who were recognized!
