In celebration of Disabilities Pride Month, the Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities (LACCOD) awarded scholarships to 14 exceptional students during a special presentation at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Observed each July, Disabilities Pride Month commemorates the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a landmark civil rights law signed on July 26, 1990, that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
This year, 11 students were recognized with the Bernard Siegel–Bill Tainter Scholarship, named in memory of two former Commissioners and tireless disability rights advocates. Congratulations to: Paola Melena, Luiz Ramirez, Halmar Chavez, Ignacio Rivera, Michael Diaz, Isaac Esquibel, Luna Sarai Gonzalez, Charles Newman, Jose Lopez, Alexander Piedras, and Cole Terry.
The Ernest T. Hamilton, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, dedicated to supporting disabled veterans, was awarded to Ignacio Montoya. We extend our deep gratitude for his service to our country.
Celebrating artistic talent, the Ruben Anthony Rios Creative Arts & Design Memorial Scholarship—named in honor of Commissioner Ruben Anthony Rios, a lifelong advocate and artist—was awarded to Derrick Ricafrente, an aspiring artist.
The President’s Award was presented to Gary Gregory III, in recognition of his determination and commitment to academic excellence.
The LACCOD Commissioners, in partnership with the Aging & Disabilities Department, congratulate all awardees and celebrate their achievements, and future potential. Their journeys embody the spirit of Disabilities Pride Month—honoring progress, empowerment, and inclusion.
