Enhancing Accessibility

The Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities (LACCOD) recently welcomed Dr. Laura Trejo, Director of the County’s Aging & Disabilities Department (AD), to their meeting on September 18, 2024.

Dr. Trejo provided updates on AD programs and initiatives focused on individuals with disabilities. Among the highlights was an exciting collaboration stemming from a recent Board of Supervisors motion aimed at increasing accessibility and inclusion at County Department of Parks and Recreation venues. This effort will benefit from the combined expertise of both AD and LACCOD.

As advocates for equity, inclusion, and independence, LACCOD Commissioners play a vital role in representing the community they serve. Tasked with advising the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and other stakeholders, their primary goal is to ensure that the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities are recognized and supported.

The Commission is committed to advocating for the best interests of people with disabilities and promoting equal access to County resources, fostering a barrier-free community.

LACCOD members are appointed by the Board and represent each District for a nonconsecutive two-year term. The Commission advises on various issues affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Its committees focus on health, employment, education, transportation, access, and recreation, while also monitoring the quality of municipal services, evaluating policies, and recommending improvements to existing laws.

The expertise and experience of the Commissioners can lead to meaningful enhancements across every County Department, particularly within AD. There’s a bright future ahead as we strengthen our collaborations.
