Empowering Voices: Elevating Understanding of Cerebral Palsy Across L.A. County

On March 20, 2025, the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department hosted its second annual Cerebral Palsy Awareness webinar, Empowering Voices: Navigating Life with Cerebral Palsy and Advocating for Inclusion. With more than 100 attendees joining virtually, the event spotlighted lived experiences, medical insights, and advocacy in action.

Moderated by Reena De Asis, founder of Inclusive Sol, the discussion brought together a powerful panel: entrepreneur Matthew Caleb Fernandez, disability rights advocate Kathleen Barajas, and family medicine physician Dr. Helen Tran. Each speaker offered a deeply personal look at navigating life with CP, from overcoming stereotypes to building inclusive healthcare systems.

Matthew shared how his family’s support and his passion for movement and advocacy help him push through challenges. “Even though I have a disability,” he said, “I get to show up for myself. We’re all warriors in our own way.”

Kathleen Barajas spoke about the power of believing in one’s own potential and stepping into leadership roles, despite society’s assumptions. “Most people’s biggest barrier is being perceived as not being competent,” she shared. “But I know I am capable—and I live that truth every day.”

Dr. Tran brought a healthcare lens to the conversation, emphasizing the importance of patient-centered care. “Health doesn’t happen in the four walls of a clinic,” she said. “It happens where people live, work, play, and pray.”

The event also highlighted the importance of accessible communication, inclusive practices, and continued advocacy. As Dr. Laura Trejo, Director of Aging & Disabilities, noted in her opening remarks, “Through efforts like this, we are building supportive communities and celebrating the courage and adaptability of those living with CP.”

A recording of the full webinar is available on the department’s YouTube channel.
