"Social Wellness Month"

The Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department is proud to launch this month’s Social Wellness campaign under the theme “Let’s build healthy relationships and improve our social well-being.” This initiative encourages older adults, individuals with disabilities, and the broader community to nurture meaningful connections as part of a healthy lifestyle. We’re highlighting the important role our community and senior centers play in fostering social ties—offering welcoming spaces where people can engage, connect, and thrive. Whether it’s joining a class, sharing a meal, or simply stopping by for conversation, small moments of connection can have a lasting impact. Together, let’s create a more connected and compassionate Los Angeles County.

Fostering Connection, Belonging, and Well-Being

Social wellness involves building and maintaining meaningful relationships and a supportive social network. For older adults and individuals with disabilities, social wellness is crucial for mental and physical health. Engaging in social activities can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

A Key Pillar of Healthy Aging and Independent Living

Strong social connections are associated with numerous health benefits:

· Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: Socially connected individuals have lower rates of heart disease and stroke.

· Improved Mental Health: Social support can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

· Enhanced Cognitive Function: Engagement in social activities has been linked to better cognitive performance and a lower risk of dementia.

Small Actions, Lasting Impact

Social wellness begins with simple, intentional acts—checking in on a neighbor, sharing a meal, joining a conversation. These moments strengthen relationships, foster belonging, and improve our well-being.

People who feel socially connected are more likely to enjoy better physical health, sharper memory, and greater emotional resilience. Even brief interactions can brighten someone’s day—and support your own sense of purpose.

When we lead with connection, we create a stronger, more compassionate community—for everyone.

This month, and every month, let’s choose connection. Let’s thrive—together.
