Deaf Awareness Month 2025

The Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department (AD) is proud to join communities worldwide in recognizing Deaf Awareness Month this September.
This observance honors the history, culture, and contributions of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind residents. It also reaffirms our commitment to equitable access, effective communication, and inclusion for all people, especially older adult and individuals with disabilities.
Throughout the month, AD will share resources, stories, and guidance to:
· Promote awareness of communication access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
· Highlight local resources for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind Angelenos.
· Celebrate the International Week of Deaf People (Sept 22-28) and the International Day of Sign Languages (Sept 23).
Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting older adults – impacting 1 in 3 people over age 65. Without accommodation, hearing difficulties can lead to isolation, limited access to services, and reduced independence.
The Aging & Disabilities Department is committed to ensuring that every older adult and person with a disability in Los Angeles County has access to:
· ASL interpreting (in-person and video remote).
These services are not “extras”-they are essential supports that enable full participation in community life.
AD partners with community organizations to expand access across the County:
· GLAD (Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness): (323) 478-8000 | gladinc.org
· 211 LA: 24/7 assistance connecting residents to local programs | 211la.org
· California Department of Social Services, Deaf Access Program (DAP): Provides free communication assistance services statewide | cdss.ca.gov/deaf-access
Whether you are an older adult, a person with hearing difficulties, a caregiver, or a community advocate, these services can help you navigate County programs and stay connected.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires County agencies to ensure effective communication with people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind. This means County programs must provide auxiliary aids and services, such as:
· Qualified sign language interpreters
· Video remote interpreting (VRI)
· Captioning and transcription services
· Written materials in accessible formats
At AD, we are committed to making sure that all residents, especially people with disabilities and older adults, can access vital information, participate in programs, and advocate for themselves.
This week, the International Week of Deaf People (IWDP) highlights the theme: “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights”.
On September 23, we also mark the International Day of Sign Languages, recognizing that sign languages are essential to human rights, culture, and full inclusion.
The Aging & Disabilities Department stands with Deaf communities across Los Angeles County in advancing equity, dignity, and language access for all generations.
