Increasing Understanding: Cerebral Palsy Webinar

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in children, affecting approximately 1 in 323 children in the U.S. and impacting around 1 million individuals nationwide. Despite these statistics, understanding CP remains crucial for improving the lives of those affected.

On August 14, 2024, the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department (AD) hosted a comprehensive webinar in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities (LACCOD), the State of California Department of Health Care Services, East Los Angeles Regional Center, Inclusive Sol, and the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

The webinar, a first of its kind in L.A. County, was organized in response to a Board motion instructing the Aging & Disabilities Department and the Department of Public Health to identify opportunities for outreach and awareness of cerebral palsy. It aimed to deepen understanding of CP and featured a diverse lineup of experts and advocates:

Reena De Asis, founder of Inclusive Sol and a parent of a child with CP, discussed her organization’s mission to support families and promote equal access to opportunities and resources for children with CP.

Christine Segar provided an overview of the California Children’s Services (CCS) Medical Therapy Program, detailing how it offers essential treatments and support for children with CP in Los Angeles County.

David Castaneda from East Los Angeles Regional Center highlighted the Self Determination Program, which empowers individuals with CP to have more control over their services and support.

Christine Economos from Help Me Grow LA outlined resources available to caregivers and how these services foster developmental success for children.

LACCOD Commissioner Deaka McClain, who was born with CP, shared her personal experiences and emphasized the importance of inclusion. Her presentation on “The 5 Stages of Changing Attitudes” provided valuable insights into shifting perceptions about disabilities.

LACCOD President Carlos Benavides, concluded the webinar with remarks that connected the various discussions and reinforced the importance of community engagement.

The webinar was well-received, offering attendees valuable information and perspectives on CP. Feedback from participants highlighted the event’s effectiveness in raising awareness and providing practical resources.

For those who were unable to attend, a recording is available on AD’s YouTube channel.

Looking ahead, the Aging & Disabilities Department plans to continue this series, aiming to further enhance understanding and support for individuals with cerebral palsy. The department extends its gratitude to the distinguished speakers and attendees for their contributions to this important conversation.
