Changes are coming in the new year to Medi-Cal, CalFresh, and other programs that support older adults and adults with disabilities. To help residents stay informed and avoid disruptions in benefits, the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department (AD) has launched a “Keep Your Benefits & Stay Healthy” information hub tailored to the needs of older adults and adults with disabilities.
December 31, 2025 is an important deadline. Taking action before the end of the year—especially for Medi-Cal renewals and enrollment—can help prevent loss or reduction of benefits. AD’s hub highlights key dates, explains what’s changing, and will be updated as new guidance is received from the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), the State of California, and/or the federal government.
Beginning January 1, Medi-Cal rules will change, including the return of asset reporting requirements. Individuals applying for or renewing Medi-Cal may need to report their assets and could be subject to a $130,000 asset limit. Non-citizens should pay close attention to renewal and enrollment deadlines, as missing them may result in limited Medi-Cal coverage. For full Medi-Cal eligibility rules and enrollment details, readers can visit the DPSS “Keep Your Benefits” webpage.
CalFresh recipients may also see changes in the coming year. The State is awaiting federal guidance on possible work requirements for certain adults ages 18–64. Depending on the final rules, participation in approved work or training activities may be required to continue receiving benefits. The most up-to-date CalFresh information is available on DPSS’s “Keep Your Benefits” webpage.
The CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) Program, the educational component of CalFresh, offered at many community and senior centers, will end on March 31, 2026. Our department will continue offering health, nutrition, and wellness programs for older adults and people with disabilities.
In addition, the Older Americans Act (OAA) Title V Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which provides paid, part-time work experience for adults age 55 and older with low incomes, is coming to an end this summer. Due to federal budget changes related to H.R.1, the program is scheduled to end on June 30, 2026, unless Congress takes action to continue it.
While some programs are changing, Los Angeles County’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA), administered by AD, will continue offering health, nutrition, and wellness services for older adults. Information on available programs can be found through AD’s Nutrition Services team by emailing NutritionServices@ad.lacounty.gov or by calling 1 (800) 510-2020.
Because program rules may change, residents are encouraged to check AD’s Keep Your Benefits & Stay Healthy hub regularly for updates. Staying informed (and acting before deadlines) can help older adults and people with disabilities keep their benefits and stay healthy.
