The Service Center for Independent Life (SCIL) continues to enhance its capacity to serve individuals with disabilities and older adults, with a recent expansion reflecting its ongoing commitment to fostering independence in the community.
SCIL offers a variety of services, from food delivery for the food-insecure and operating a pantry for the unhoused, to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and installing home modifications like grab bars and access ramps to improve safety and accessibility.
On Thursday, August 29, 2024, SCIL marked a major milestone by expanding into a third suite at their Claremont facility, sharing the space with Communication Services for the Deaf. Together, they celebrated with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony that brought together clients, local residents, government officials, and community partners to honor this achievement.
The success of SCIL is a testament to the leadership of Executive Director Larry Grable and his dedicated team, as well as the generosity of individuals, businesses, and organizations that contribute to the cause. Their work continues to make a real difference in the lives of those they serve.
Both the County of Los Angeles and the City of Claremont recognized SCIL for their significant contributions, applauding the organization’s impact on local communities. Cheers of celebration filled the event as Grable and his staff shared their vision for improving quality of life through expanded services and continued advocacy.
Founded in 1980 by Claremont residents with disabilities, SCIL grew into a state-certified Independent Living Center in 1992, and today, it represents more than 150,000 individuals with disabilities in eastern San Gabriel Valley.
SCIL continues to empower its clients Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, at their Claremont location on 107 S Spring Street.
Congratulations to SCIL on this exciting expansion and for continuing to empower independence in our communities!
