Building Community: Older Adults Gather for CA-44 Annual Luncheon

On Friday, August 16, 2024, the Carson Community Center was a hive of activity as older adults gathered for the Seventh Annual Senior Briefing and Health Fair. The event offered free eye exams, blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, and dental screenings, in addition to a hot meal, creating a supportive and communal atmosphere.

This yearly event serves as a vital opportunity for older adults to stay informed about legislative updates while also accessing essential health services. It combines the practicality of health screenings with the warmth of a shared meal, fostering a sense of community among attendees.

Representatives from several Los Angeles County departments, including the Aging & Disabilities Department (AD), the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), and the County Library, were present alongside a diverse array of community-based organizations and other partners. Together, they provided valuable information and resources to support and empower the attendees.

Approximately 200 attendees visited the Aging & Disabilities Department’s table, where they received information about a range of programs, including Adult Protective Services (APS), the Area Agency on Aging (AAA), the Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP), Community and Senior Centers, L.A. Found, and New Freedom Transportation. The department remains committed to answering questions and helping older adults connect with the resources they need.

Organized by Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44), this seventh annual event attracted over a thousand older adults, underscoring the importance of such gatherings in building a strong, informed, and connected community.
